Inspired by true events, The God Complex takes readers on a thrill ride through Chinese medicine. Desperate for a cure and spurned by his Western physicians, Steve Benson was left with no other choice but to take a leap of faith … a leap that landed him in Boston’s Chinatown. Discover the secrets of Chinese medicine and its connection to martial arts as the mystery unfolds.

Excerpt from Chapter 20
…As usual, the discussion turned to acupuncture. Maybe it’s because she was a nurse. Maybe I’m just that predictable. Anyhow, part way through the conversation, she turned to me and said, “Have you been to Tom Tam?” She started raving about his style of acupuncture. Having been in Chinatown for eight years now, I thought I had met every doctor there. Naturally, I was skeptical at first, but decided to keep an open mind. A few days later, I made an appointment.

…After a few weeks, Steve noticed that Doctor Tam’s patient base consisted primarily of cancer patients who had heard of him through friends or the Internet. Steve was surprised when he saw a nurse from Massachusetts General Hospital wheeling in a patient to receive treatments. He later learned that the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute had initiated a survey study of the benefits of Tam’s Tong Ren therapy. Local area news stations had also begun covering the success rates of his patients. Steve didn’t understand how he was just learning of Doctor Tam now.

Chris Titus has graciously shared with us the first five chapters of his novel as well as chapter twenty in which Tom Tam’s story is featured.

It is well known that The Tam Healing System is extremely beneficial for cancer patients. We have seen this in hundreds and hundreds of cases. For us as practitioners, we have protocols for all cancers and diseases by opening a blockage which causes resistance and thereby causes a reduced performance of proper bodily functions. Blockages negatively impact these areas:

1)	The Central Nervous System – bioelectrical system and related nerves and organs
2)	The Endocrine System – biochemical system and related glands
3)	The Cardiovascular system – blood, circulation and oxygen system and related organs
4)	The Digestive System – Digestion, absorption and elimination and related organs
5)	The Immune System – Pathogen and toxin management and elimination and related glands and organs

To combat cancer, we need to know which system may have a blockage but first, this requires us to know the nature of cancer itself. To better understand this, let’s take a look at the different theories of what cancer is.

First, is cancer a pathogen? The answer is no. Cancer is not an actual external pathogen but may be the result of a pathogen, deficiency or toxin. It is a normal cell but a special type. Therefore, a cancer cell is not detected as an abnormal cell since it is, at least initially, a part of the normal bodily transformations and therefore does not get detected or eradicated by the immune system.

So, is cancer a normal process in the body? The answer is yes, at the initial stage. Like so many mechanisms in the body, it is a two part process which either increases or decreases something. For cancer this is further confirmed since the body has these two types of genes:

•	Oncogenes – genes which create cancer cells – the body thereby produces cancer cells
•	Cancer suppressor genes – genes which inhibit cancer cells – to keep it in check after it does its work

According to Dr Burzynski, the pioneer in antineoplastin cancer research and treatment, cancer is often caused when there is a deficiency in the cancer suppressor genes. He has had success and his focus is to instigate cancer suppression activity. Others, like Dr. Viktoris Kulvinskas and many others for years have promoted the premise that cancer is a stage of normal bodily processes. Healing cancer is accomplished by returning the body back to normal, eliminating the need for the body to continue to create cancer cells for repair. The discovery of these genes now proves cancer to be normal in the body.

A blockage in my healing system means that where the Chi or bioelectricity has a hard time passing through a nerve or meridian. We can detect it by hand with pressure or palpate with touch. Most blockages may result in pain or be uncomfortable when pressure is applied. A blockage area is an area of high resistance and physically can be knotty and lumpy. Anywhere the bio signal or Chi travels with difficulty within the body means there is a blockage.

According to the feedback system theory, each organ has its own loop for circulation and functioning. This loop consists of three basic components; a control center, receptor and effector. The control center determines the value of some aspect in the body called a controlled condition, which should be maintained. In our bodies there are hundreds of controlled conditions; heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose level, acidity of the blood, body temperature and breathing rate. The control center receives informative signals about the status of a controlled condition from a receptor, and then determines the appropriate course of action if needed to maintain homeostasis. The receptor monitors changes in the controlled condition, and then sends the information called input to the control center. Any stress that changes a controlled condition is called a stimulus. For example a stimulus such as exercise, which increases body temperature, will cause thermal receptors to send input to a control center located in the brain. An effector will then receive a signal from the control center called the output, and produce an appropriate response of effect. In other words when you exercise your brain which is the control center signals for increased secretions by your sweat glands which are the effectors. When the sweat evaporates from the skin, then the body temperature can drop down to normal.

In other words when you exercise your brain which is the control center signals for increased secretions by your sweat glands which are the effectors. When the sweat evaporates from the skin, then the body temperature can drop down to normal.

In my healing system there are energy loops with three components also. There are the brain, the nervous system and the organs. All energy is conducted from the brain, as the brain is the central computer system within the body. When this computer system has blockages it can result in erroneous biosignal changes. In response to this I have developed a cranial chart for my healing system. Details about brain points are in my Tong Ren Therapy book. In fact the brain points are not completely charted in my book, the basic points in the cranial chart are the commonly used points. I hope in the future to fill up the points in the cranial chart as I come to understand them more in continuing to develop a beneficial healing system.
Nerve blockage points are from the spinal column. They are the basic Huatuojiaji points. Each point on the side of spinal column means a connection to an organ. The points of the spinal column are only from my daily practice experience. It is without research proven by medical experts. It is limited to my ability. Yet I do not feel alone, many healing experiences in the world are not proven and researched by any medical expert. Blockage points in the spinal column are easy to find and detect, and are the most often used.

Other blockage points are from the organs, which I call ouch points similar to an Ashi point in TCM. The blockage point in the organ is easy to find. Most patients already know where their problem is, while others have a doctor’s diagnosis. In some cases a doctor cannot give a diagnosis or just believes it is a psychological problem. In this case we must follow the patient’s complaint and use our own way to find out where the problem is and what organ is related to the problem.
In my healing system, each problem may be from a blockage anywhere along the energy loop; the brain, nerve or organ. So when we try to detect a blockage within the body, we must consider the brain, nerves and organs together. Remember that blockages form over time. In the case of an illness the blockage is already formed, however in the case of an injury from an accident, food poisoning, or virus the blockage may still be forming. If we do not take care of an energy passing point, it can build into a future blockage.

Blockages cause many internal diseases. This is the major theory in my healing system. According to TCM theory, six types of evil Chi cause blockages. They are wind, cold, dampness, dryness, heat and fire. These evil influences are symbolic of what our bodies feel from nature’s effects. For example, when we catch a cold with symptoms of chills and aches this means a wind and cold attack caused by the cold or wind-cold condition, and if a cold results in a high temperature, this would now be called fire or wind-heat. It is a difficult concept for the Western mind to grasp. It is not easily accepted, since evil Chi can’t be measured or detected by modern equipment. But the Chinese can easily accept this theory, because when born, they begin to have this education.

Western medicine recognizes some types of blockages in the body. These blockages are those which diagnostic equipment can find. An example of this type of blockage is a tough fibrous tissue that feels painful under moderate hand pressure. This includes anything that mechanically pinches the nerve and causes a nerve disorder. This can be a tumor, slipped disk, calcium deposit, or arthritis. Pain is a signal that something is wrong. Sometimes a knot is difficult to find by inexperienced healers or perhaps the muscle knot is too deep and/or too thick. X-ray equipment does not show muscle knots very well because it is primarily used to diagnose the structural problems of the bones and it is difficult to make an image of soft tissue. Knots may affect muscles or tendons and often put pressure on the spinal cord or even pull it out of line as in scoliosis. This can cause nerves to be pinched, particularly the autonomic nerves which regulate the function of the internal organs. Western doctors still don’t use this technique for diagnosis and treatment. Often they honestly tell patients that they can’t find anything wrong with them from their tests, and when they fail to find the cause, they tell their patients that the cause of their problem is psychological.
Most blockages can be found next to the bones of the spinal column. The spinal cord is where the nervous system passes the signal to the body and coordinates with the function of the body. If a spinal cord nerve has been pinched, then the nerve will cause high resistance. It will be difficult for the brain signal to pass bioelectricity to the organ. Near a spine blockage we can see a swelling of the muscle or a difference in the skin such as a mole, rash, pimple, or a darker color than other areas. Sometimes the skin will feel like it has a high temperature.

Finding the blockage is an easy job from looking with the eye. After looking at the spine, then we use our hands to find and prove where the blockage is. One needs little training in the hand technique to find the blockage. Another way to find the blockage is from the patient’s complaints. When a patient talks about what they have, we know where the blockage is. For example, if someone’s complaint is a heart problem, then we know the T5 left hand side has a blockage. If someone has breast cancer, we immediately know it is from the T4 on the same side that is causing it.

Another way to know the blockage is from physical contact with people. When someone shakes hands with us, if his palm has a lot of sweat, it means he may have a T4 and T5 blockage. If someone has a cold hand, it may be from a T7 and T8 blockage. Blockages in the head are difficult to find, as the blockages in the skull can be too deep or too small. But concerning problems in circulation to the brain we can find the point or area around the neck, which can be the blockage. When the neck has tension or injury, it may cause poor circulation to the brain. The brain needs more circulation than any other part of the body. To avoid and open the blockage in the brain, we should pay attention to our neck and perform stretching exercises.

Many things may cause blockages; the most common is the use of wrong posture in our daily lives. Wrong posture when we watch TV, use a computer, type, sit in school, drive, or sleep on a water bed, all cause tension in the neck and back. Other causes are from exercise and injury. Many times the wrong exercise can cause the neck and spinal column to carry too much tension. For example, when some people do weight lifting, their spinal columns may have a curvature, and their necks may have knots. Curvatures and knots, if not released, will form blockages. Also, pregnancy and delivery may cause a blockage, as some babies are born with them. If we use the blockage theory, we can understand and explain why an infant has a physical problem. A baby who has eczema, it has a blockage in the GV22 and T4 areas, just the same as an adult who has eczema. It is not caused from the food and sun.

Overactive organs can cause the formation of blockages. From the study of human anatomy, we know that movement of organs is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Sometimes when we overuse an organ, the body cannot pass enough bioelectricity, and it can then form a blockage. An example is when someone eats too much junk food and the stomach needs more activity to digest the food. That means the stomach needs more bioelectricity or Chi to move.

An injury can cause a blockage. This injury can be for many reasons. Exercise or a car accident could be the main cause of the injury. Many times this injury cannot be felt, because it is in the autonomic nervous system and not the nerves themselves that cause the pain. In nerve injury, as with the sciatic nerve, we can feel the pain or are uncomfortable. But the autonomic nerve is the function nerve, and we cannot feel the pain even though this blockage can cause a malfunction in the organs. Organ malfunctions develop so slowly that we do not pay attention to them. This type of injury does not show up on modern equipment. But when we press it, it will cause pain or an uncomfortable sensation. A knot can be felt by touch.

When we treat a patient, the first thing we do is find where the blockage is. Then we try to find out the reason for the blockage. No matter, the thing we must do is open the blockage by using any technique.

In my healing philosophy, no one is healthy except a newborn baby. It is the same as a car when it runs with more mileage and for a long time; it must have something wrong. Many patients come to my office and they tell me that they are healthy after the doctor’s checkup. The doctor’s report and Chi imbalance are not the same. Sometimes the blockage is formed in a short time but the patient still has not felt the syndrome. Many times the patient does not realize that the physical imbalance for him is a sickness.

Usually the patient has more than one blockage in the body. When we open the blockages we should open the top one first, then we should go down the body. This is because the energy from the brain runs down the body. If the top one has not been opened, then the bottom one will need more work to open it.

This is a hands-on workshop - you will receive treatments and be giving treatments for each of the other students.

Tui Na is a Chinese massage therapy. In the Tom Tam Healing system, Tui Na plays an important role in opening up physical blockages in the muscular/skeletal framework of our bodies in order to reduce resistance in the nervous, circulatory, hormone, and lymph systems. As these blockages are opened, then the body can do the healing work it needs to do.

If you know about Tong Ren - you can use these techniques on your family and friends, in addition to Tong Ren treatments, to locate and open up physical blockages.

Description
This is a hands-on workshop – you will receive treatments and be giving treatments for each of the other students.

If you know about Tong Ren – you can use these techniques on your family and friends, in addition to Tong Ren treatments, to locate and open up physical blockages.
If you are an massage therapist or holistic body worker – you can incorporate these concepts into your existing practice, providing you with another tool to release problem areas that have not responded to traditional approaches.

By understanding the physical location of Spinal points and Acupoints as listed in the “A Lazy Bum’s Healing – Tong Ren Therapy Cross Reference Manual” – your focus and intention will be much clearer when doing Tong Ren treatments. These points and the anatomy located below them will give you the foundation to really understand the blockages being released by Tui Na and Tong Ren treatments.

This workshop will cover -
– basic review of the Tom Tam Healing system for Tong Ren Healing, Tui Na Massage and the concept of blockages
– location and details of Spinal points and common Acupoints that are used in Tong Ren and Tui Na Massage treatments
– 10 basic Tui Na Massage techniques
– spinal system – cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacrum
– central and peripheral nervous systems, sympathetic nerves and parasympathetic nerves and what they control and details of the Cranial Nerves
– basic anatomy of muscles, bones, circulation and lymph
– when you will use Tong Ren instead of Tui Na Massage to treat someone
– practice the Qigong form “Tai Chi Dao Yin” by Tom Tam as we do warm up exercises once each day.

Saturday starts with the overview of concepts and the rest of the day is spent locating and working on the Neck, Head and Collar Bone spinal and acupoints while the “client” is seated. I also include a group Tong Ren treatment for all of the students.
Sunday is spent locating spinal and acupoints and working on the Back, Sacrum, Hips, and Neck while the “client” is lying on a massage table.

This 2 day workshop is given by Pat McLeod. Pat took her training in this style of Tui Na with Mauro Pontarollo, R.AC, R.TCMP and has been providing Tui Na Massage treatments since 2002. In Dec 2003, Pat took her first Tong Ren Therapy training with Tom Tam and has pursued self directed studies in anatomy and physiology of the human body, continued her training with Tom in Boston and Nanaimo, and treated many clients both in her studio and at a distance over the telephone ever since. In the spirit of the Tong Ren community, Pat has been offering free Tong Ren GP Healing sessions in the Nanaimo area since 2004. Recent Tui Na workshops were held in Edmonton/Two Hills, Alberta in April 2010, Nanaimo, BC in May 2010, Bellevue, WA in August 2010 and Nanaimo, BC in September 2010. Pat has been informally teaching people to do Tong Ren treatments during the nearly 7 years of offering Tong Ren GP Healing sessions and she is now offering workshops to cover the “Tong Ren – Basics for Beginners” material in one weekend. For her workshops, Pat has created two support manuals to provide detailed information for students – “Tui Na Massage” and “Tong Ren Healing – Basics for Beginners” both part of the Tom Tam Healing System.

Please contact Joslien Wannechko – (780) 663-3745 or email joslien@hughes.net for more information or to register for the workshop.

Further questions contact Pat McLeod – (250) 756-4721 or email p89_mcleod@hotmail.com.
